Te Kura struggles

I think Te Kura is a genuinely good idea if it was done correctly. It allows people who cant go to school; whether thats for their mental health, geographical placement, or if they want to do a subject that isn't offered at their school. But Te Kura has done it so incredibly poorly. The teachers are absolutely no help in your course and when you email them asking for clarification it takes weeks for them to respond or they'll just ignore your email. I have been taking my course this year and have failed to hand anything in as my teacher refuses to help me. When I hand in a essay I receive a failed grade for using a different synonym. Thats right, not for the core of my essay or my developed conclusions, but literally because I used 'govern' instead of 'regulate' (which is a real reason why I failed my latest hand-in). The website is extremely outdated and the module thats supposed to teach you how to use the website is useless; leaving you to have to learn completely by yourself on a website your completely unfamiliar to. They claim that this is a school which have good motivation. Which I do. I get excellences in all my classes, I constantly get high grades on my engagement, and I'm liked by my teachers at my school (as I'm taking a dual course with Te Kura). But it is impossible; regardless of how self motivated you are. To learn from Te Kura. I genuinely tell whoever is reading this and thinking about joining Te Kura, please do not do it. I now have to work ten times harder in my classes to get a endorsement in Year 12 because Te Kura has completely failed me. The work is impossible, the teachers dont care about you, and the system is built for you not to succeed. And I know some people will have completely opposite experiences than me, but I know a overwhelming about of people have the exact same problem. So please consider just doing a course at your own school instead of on Te Kura and if you really do want to do online school think about doing Net NZ. Its far more involved and successful than Te Kura; as I'm genuinely baffled that Te Kura is still running with how completely useless it is.

Shut it down!

Shut it down!

Te Kura is designed to provide homeschooling options for students. It has no structure, no deadlines, and teachers' random follow-ups don't work. In my experience, teacher R. Lock's random downgrading emails were a disaster for a student already struggling. I guess this review is many years of frustrations and helplessness coming out.

We decided together with our daughter to try homeschooling because the public high school (Rototuna High School) was an absolute failure and infestation of the woke indoctrination.

A young teenager with all the time on their hands but without any accountability or deadlines became too much for two working parents.
In my experience, homeschooling through Te Kura is a waste of time, and you can be sure your child will be more likely to fail than to succeed

Simply put, there is no pressure or structure on the student to perform and hand in assignments weekly or fortnightly. Therefore, submitting assignments periodically becomes impossible because there is no accountability or discipline.

When students have all the time in the world without accountability and pressure to perform, homeschooling becomes less important and a second priority. Yes, it should not be like that, but the reality that we as parents, live in is just that.

I do not recommend Te Kura to any parents.
We've moved overseas, and our daughter has enrolled online again in this country. She now has weekly deadlines to submit assignments and has calls with the teachers weekly.

The online portal is difficult to navigate. No or little proactive contact from the teacher. Sometimes multiple follow up emails just would not be answered. The feeling I have is the staff and teacher just don't care. Once you've signed up, they forget about you. The program isn't about the student that's for sure.

I don't think anyone behind this school knows how a school works.

It's been three months since the start of the school year - and not a single teacher has e-mailed me. I know there isn't a problem with communication, as my teachers had no problem with this last year.

This school is pretty impossible without guidance from your teachers, so, what on earth is going on?

Also - the amount of grammatical errors, spelling mistakes, and punctuation misuses from the teachers is unacceptable.

Very frustrating

We have been waiting for a laptop to arrive for 2 weeks now. I have rung numerous times, only to receive the voicemail, leaving untold messages asking for a callback. Still waiting. Very poor delivery and so frustrating for my daughter to be having to do her work on my phone.

No help

It is a very easy way to do schooling. I find that I’ve done very well getting credits this year as I’ve been able to do work within my own time. I also have some amazing teachers who communicate with me a good amount (It may take awhile to find the right fit but once you find it they are very helpful).

Now the biggest negative…..I feel like Te Kura as an organisation doesn’t care about its students. I entered Te Kura due to mental health issues when I was 11 (5 years ago!!!) and haven’t been offered any sort of support since then. All progress I’ve made with my Mental health has been made by myself, and it’s not like I haven’t tried. Me and my parents have sent countless emails asking about any sort of help I can get but we have NEVER received a response. They basically set you up with a login and forget about you 😂

Why I like Te Aho O Te Kura Pounamu

I am a student currently studying with Te Kura. Their staff is really friendly and everything is easy to navigate. If you are stuck or don't know how to do something regarding the work or the Te Kura Homepage, you can always email or call your teacher/teachers. They provide all students with an opportunity to take certain courses to achieve their dream job/goals. I have used the opportunities they have given me, and I have accomplishments to prove that they are valuable to the skillset you may need.

#1 school

An awesome caring school.
I appreciate all the teachers efforts with us students and their kindness and patience, never letting an email go without response and helping us work at our own pace. Never gonna regret switching to Te Aho o Te Kura Ponamu (Te Kura) <3

Self motivation required

High level of self motivation required. Teachers tend to appreciate academic students. Generally you’ll have to be proactive, ask the teachers for help as opposed to the teacher offering. Online portal is quite clunky.
