King’s College in Auckland Nee Zealand is not fit to be a boarding school. Don’t let the facilities away you. Bullying is alive and well in the living quarters and the staff do not pay attention to catch it.
When a complaint is made the school prefer to take a very long time investigating the complaint and favour the bully over the victim. The aim is for the victim to leave the school so that the school does not have to deal with the bully or add to the student discipline statistics collected by to Ministry of Education.
Private or independent schools in NZ are not regulated to the same high level that public schools are by the ERO (the Minsirry of Education regulators). The ERO will tell you this if you enquire. Private or independent schools in NZ are governed by a Board of Directors, so if you are still considering sending your child to King’s College for boarding make sure you have thoroughly investigated who is on the board of governors, who the headmaster is and if you believe what the school is saying regarding their bullying policies working.
Do not go here if you’re leftist, alternative (punk, goth, emo, etc), and don’t fit the prep or athlete mould. I am a girl and I was bullied for liking rock music and not being “boy crazy”, and for supporting gay rights! I will say the teachers and academics were fantastic though, really great classrooms too.
My son goes here. Teaching competency is decidedly mixed so i pay for outside maths tutoring. Some teachers are great but others are sub-standard.There is still a lot of bullying. My son's head was slammed into a gate the other night by a senior boy. School counselling is a complete shambles- like amateur night in Dixie. Head of counselling who was fabulous - up and left without notice. I guess in frustration. My sons house master never responds to my emails, so it's unsurprisingly when that tone is set from the top. Think twice about spending your money here.
Great school, has a really good house environment that makes you feel at home, some teachers are amazing and others aren't. Extremely high uniform standards which was annoying at times.
